Introduction
The Importance of Nigerian Standard for Drinking Water QualityNigerian Standard for Drinking Water Quality contains mandatory limits
concerning constituents and contaminants of water that are known to be hazardous to health and/or give rise to complaints from consumers. The
standard includes a set of procedures and good practices required to meet
the mandatory limits.
Drinking Water Quality Standard Used in Nigeria
In 2005, the National Council on Water Resources (NCWR) recognized
the need to urgently establish acceptable Nigerian Standard for Drinking Water Quality because it was observed that the “Nigerian Industrial Standard for Potable Water” developed by Standards Organisation of Nigeria and the “National Guidelines and Standards for Water Quality in Nigeria” developed by Federal Ministry of Environment did not receive a wide acceptance by all stakeholders in the country.
Since water quality issues are health related issues, the Federal Ministry of Health, collaborating with the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (the only body responsible for developing National Standards in Nigeria) and working through a technical committee of key stakeholders developed this Standard. The list of the members of the technical committee is presented in the Annex to this document.
